Merry del Val, Rafael Carlos, Cardinal, 1865-1930

Born at the Spanish Embassy in London, the son of a Spanish nobleman Rafael Calos Merry Del Val and Sofia Josefa de Zulueta, the daughter of Count Zulueta. Trained at Ushaw and was Ordained 1888, becoming Monsignor in 1891, as a protegee of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan he became a leading figure in the anti-Modernist movement. In 1903 he was made Secretary of State by Pope Pius X and was elevated to the Cardinalate in the November. In 1914 he was removed as Secretary of State by Benedict XV in 1914, and was instead given the lesser role of Secretary of the Holy Office in which role he remained until his death.

Scott, Christopher, Monsignor Canon, 1839-1922

Born at Cambridge, the son of David Scott. Received into the Catholic Church at Peterborough, trained at Oscott and the VEC. Served the mission at Coldham Cottage, near Bury St Edmunds (1862-65), then at Northampton (1865-83), and finally rector at Cambridge (1883-1922), where he built the new church of the English Martyrs 1887-90 and served as chaplain to the university. Provost and Vicar General of Northampton, appointed Monsignor in 1901.

Vaughan, Herbert Alfred Henry, Cardinal, 1832-1903

Born at Gloucester the eldest son of Colonel John Francis Vaughan, of an old recusant family. Educated at Stonyhurst and Downside, then in Rome, being Ordained 1854. Appointed to the staff at St Edmund's College, Ware as Vice-President. Acquired The Tablet in 1868. Founded the Mill Hill Missionaries 1869. Appointed 2nd Bishop of Salford 1872, then elevated to 3rd Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster 1892.
