Bunting, Percy William, Sir, 1836-1911

Born in Radcliffe, Lancashire, son of Thomas Bunting, a Manchester solicitor. The family were Wesleyan. Percy became a Barrister of Lincolns Inn, and was editor of The Contemporary Review from 1882, and of the Methodist Times from 1902 to 1907. He was awarded a knighthood,

Swanwick, Anna, 1813-1899

Born in Liverpool, a Unitarian, went in 1839 to Berlin, where she studied German, Greek and Hebrew. On returning to England in 1843, she began publishing translations of the German dramatists. About 1850 Bunsen advised her to translate the Greek dramatists, and in 1865 she began the publication of Aeschylus. She was a pupil of F. W. Newman, took a keen interest in social questions, and especially in the higher education of women.
