Vaughan, Herbert Alfred Henry, Cardinal, 1832-1903

Born at Gloucester the eldest son of Colonel John Francis Vaughan, of an old recusant family. Educated at Stonyhurst and Downside, then in Rome, being Ordained 1854. Appointed to the staff at St Edmund's College, Ware as Vice-President. Acquired The Tablet in 1868. Founded the Mill Hill Missionaries 1869. Appointed 2nd Bishop of Salford 1872, then elevated to 3rd Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster 1892.
